BIO STATEMENT RESUME

My work reflSteven Carvalho was born in 1947. His childhood was spent in and around remote locations of Oran, Algeria. Most of his childhood was occupied by books, LEGOS, and fatty foods. During this time, the National Liberation Front (FLN) sought freedom from France, initiating a violent revolution that made life extremely difficult for the inhabitants of the country as well as the Carvalho family. Tired of struggling in a cruel and harsh world, the family relocated to the United States in the late 1950’s upon an impromptu decision to better their lives. Steven and his family settled in in NYC with absolutely no intentions of ever setting foot in Algeria again. By the grace of God, Steven was enrolled at the Western Academy of the Arts in NYC where life painting and figure drawings classes caught the attention of the wide eyed young boy and would hold that attention for the better part of the next 4 years. After graduation, he immediately enrolled in the graduate program at The Hopkins School of Fine Arts. With the help of his younger classmates, he was introduced to prominent artists who would further his interest in painting and communication. Any interaction with Kitaj, Borges, De Kooning, or Motherwell was not uncommon. Like a candle losing its flame, years passed by and though unable to meet the success of his college years, he flirted briefly with it when his head, with permission from the Carvalho family, was featured in the Damien Hirst work "For the Love of God. His work can be seen in the collection of The Museum of Bad Art and in the lobby of Montserrat Collge of Art. Carvalho teaches at Greenview College of Fine Arts in New York City, where he also resides.
